Peanut butter sandwiches with chili. Yep, you read that right.
Apparently, this is a thing! And judging by how passionate people are about it, I may have been missing out on a comfort food combination for years.
For some, especially here in the Midwest, a peanut butter sandwich alongside a steaming bowl of chili is a childhood staple. Some dip the sandwich right into the chili, while others enjoy it on the side. Sweet, salty, savory… I can see the appeal!
Growing up, chili meant something a little different in my family.
My grandma made an Italian-style chili with ground veal and pork, sweet green bell peppers, Italian tomatoes, garlic and chicken stock. No kidney beans or overwhelming heat. Just rich, hearty flavors simmered together with plenty of love.
She served it with buttery garlic bread, crusty Italian bread, freshly grated Parmesan and occasionally cornbread. Peanut butter sandwiches? Not so much!
But that’s what I love about food. Every family has its traditions, and sometimes the combinations that sound the strangest carry the sweetest memories.
Now I’m curious. Are you team peanut butter sandwich with chili, or is this combination completely new to you?
And if you’re looking for a delicious chili recipe, give my grandma’s Italian-style veal and pork chili a try!
